5 Big Secrets Regarding Depression and Happiness

As I prepared for my Hidden Causes and Remedies for Depression presentation, I was happy to discover some very simple explanations as to what makes us happy and unhappy. Dr. Robert Lustig, author of The Hacking The American Mind, really synthesized the "happy/unhappy" issue into something that's extremely easy to understand. This important discovery was shared and expanded upon in my LIVE presentation. Some of the simple truths about what makes us happy and unhappy, according to Dr. Lustig, go as follow. These are only some of the findings I shared with the audience.....
1. Happiness is destroyed by pleasure seeking activities due to how key neurotransmitters work in the body. (dopamine and serotonin) This means that when we seek pleasure as a habit....like drinking coffee, drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana, smoking cigarettes, scrolling our phones, watching TV, eating junk food etc.......we set off a chemical reaction inside of ourselves that destroys our ability to feel and process happiness.
2. Happiness is also downregulated when we engage in activities that don't include our friends, family or other humans. The more someone is alone, the less happiness they can process in their system.
3. Happiness can only be experienced when we have long term goals and not when we resort to short term hits of pleasure-based chemicals. (again our pleasure based chemical society is a big problem here, for what causes depression yet getting off those habit-forming chemicals is also hard, which I addressed in the presentation as well. There are ways to stop addictions, and those solutions were included in my talk.)
4. Happiness can only increase when we give and contribute. Seeking pleasure through taking or consumption, decreases happiness........as pleasure seeking activates remove happiness-based impulses from our nervous systems. Our "take take take consume consume consume" society (absent of social contribution) has set us up for massive depression.
5. The extremes of pleasure seeking will lead to depression plus addictions to pleasure-based chemicals or activities. There are no addictions that can form when people engage in happiness building behaviors. Pleasure pursuits can make us addicted. Happiness only makes us content and happier.
Of course, there's much that was discussed in this new presentation, regarding the causes and remedies for depression. Obviously, this simple framework is rarely (if ever) discussed with medical patients regarding their depression. It's easy to see that a patient's consumption of pleasure-seeking chemicals and participation in pleasure-seeking activities is rarely reviewed, if a person enters the medical system with symptoms of depression. I believe this lack of education and review of what really causes depression, is absent from the system purposely. This is another topic that I discussed in this presentation, regarding the hidden causes and remedies for depression.
